Hello and welcome to the Southampton University Phil Website

150 voices

2 Choirs

1 Amazing sound

The Phil is a non-auditioning group of about 50 members who sing with the Southampton Philharmonic Choir. The Southampton Philharmonic Choir (SPC) is a very large choir of over 120 people, who rehearse on a Monday 7:30 - 9:30pm in Turner Sims Concert Hall. The two groups sing as one and are conducted by a professional conductor - David Gibson in 3 concerts a year. The choir is accompanied at their concerts by the New London Sinfonia, and professional soloists. The mix of the two choirs gives us a unique blend of youthful voices with those of more experienced singers and a once in a lifetime opportunity for performing musical works on a massive scale in an ensemble of over 150 voices.

Past works have included the Bach 'St Matthew Passion', performed to 800 people in Winchester Cathedral, Handels 'Messiah', a millennium commission by Dominic Muldowney entitled 'The Fall of Jerusalem', Brittens 'War Requiem' in a gala concert marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and Mozart's 'Requiem' performed for charity in the Mayflower theatre. We have also taken part in radio broadcasts for the BBC and fund-raising for Children in Need.

Other highlights include an evening of American music and performances of Bach's B Minor Mass, in Winchester Cathedral, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in the anvil, Basingstoke, Elgars Dream of Gerontius and Faure's Requiem . We have regular social events planned throughout the year often with our partners the Chamber choir and we all gather in the Stag's after rehearsal for a few drinks and a chat!
